A stroke occurs when blood vessels carrying oxygen and other nutrients to the brain suddenly burst or become blocked. When blood and oxygen fail to reach the brain, brain cells begin to die and a stroke results.
Stroke is our nation's third largest killer and the leading cause of severe, long-term disability. UMass Memorial hospitals are leaders in Central and Western Massachusetts in diagnosing and treating stroke patients.
