Inpatient Psychiatry

UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester operates two acute inpatient psychiatric units, licensed by the Department of Mental Health, that contract with most public and private insurers. Services are available to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. While referrals can be made by calling 508-334-1000 and asking to speak to the specific unit, most referrals are made by the patient’s primary care physician or the patient’s local emergency mental health screening program. Patients immediately should seek assistance at their nearest emergency room if their condition is considered life threatening.

University Campus - 8 East
This 27-bed, locked, acute psychiatric unit on our University Campus is designed for adults, although consideration is given to adolescents over the age of 16. Under the direction of the unit’s medical director and attending psychiatrists, 8 East provides a multidisciplinary clinical assessment including psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy and social work, as well as referral to other medical subspecialties as identified through the patient’s individualized evaluation and treatment plan. Each patient participates in the development of his/her treatment plan, and every effort is made to coordinate the inpatient care with the care and support offered by family and/or community providers.

Psychiatric Treatment Center
The Psychiatric Treatment Center is a 24-bed locked, acute psychiatric unit located in the Bryant Building at Worcester State Hospital. This program is designed for adults and provides acute clinical care to patients who are challenged by significant mental illness and who have or will rely on intense community support following discharge. Under the direction of the center’s medical director and attending psychiatrists, this unit provides a multidisciplinary clinical assessment including psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy and social work, as well as limited referrals to other medical subspecialties as identified through the patient's individualized evaluation and treatment plan. Each patient participates in the development of his/her treatment plan, and every effort is made to coordinate the inpatient care with the care and support offered by family and/or community providers.
