Adolescent Inpatient/Residential Psychiatry Services

UMass Memorial Medical Center does not operate acute inpatient psychiatry units for children or adolescents. However, the 8 East adult inpatient unit admits adolescents over the age of 16 who are felt to be able to benefit from the services offered by this unit. If appropriate, acute inpatient services are available to individuals regardless of their ability to pay.

UMass Medical School operates several long-term hospital and residential programs for adolescents. These units are located on the Westborough State and Worcester State Hospital campuses. Programs operate under contract to the Department of Mental Health, which are the sole referrers.

While referrals can be made by calling 508-334-1000 and asking to speak to the 8 East Unit, most referrals are made either by the patient's primary care physician or the patient's local emergency mental health screening program. Patients or families should immediately seek assistance at their nearest emergency room if the child's condition is considered life threatening.

8 East
8 East is a 27-bed, locked acute psychiatric unit located on the University Campus for adults. Consideration is given to adolescents over the age of 16 who are felt to be able to benefit from the acute services that are offered. Central Massachusetts has no acute inpatient beds for children and adolescents. You, Inc. has an Intensive Acute Residential Program at the Wetzel Center that is designed to offer community-based diversions for youth who would otherwise be hospitalized.

Adolescent Continuing Care Units at Westborough State Hospital
This is a two-unit, 32-bed program for adolescents. The child division of the Department of Mental Health is the sole referrer to this program, and most referrals are made for youth who are on acute psychiatric units and who are unable to be stepped down to less restrictive environments. These units are designed to provide long-term hospitalization services to adolescents whose clinical condition requires the utmost structure, psychiatric management, medical monitoring and specialized educational approaches. Patients also receive family therapy. While discharge plans could include returning home, most patients are referred to residential programming.

Behavior Intense Residential Treatment at Westborough State Hospital (Connections)
Connections is supported by a contract with the Department of Mental Health and designed to treat adolescents who are in the care and custody of the Department of Social Services. The Department of Mental Health in conjunction with the Department of Social Services makes all referrals. Most, if not all youth are referred from acute inpatient hospitals, and referrals are limited to those youth who cannot be treated in a less secure environment.

Transitions Adolescent Intensive Residential Treatment Program at Worcester State Hospital
Transitions is a 14-bed, residential treatment program with closed admissions to the Department of Mental Health. The length of stay is approximately a year, and is open to patients 13 to 19 years of age. Each patient works with staff to develop an individualized treatment plan that is reviewed on a regular basis. Treatment plans proscribe a full continuum of services that include behavioral interventions, psychiatry, educational programming, family therapy, medical monitoring, recreation and group work.
