UMass Memorial Medical Center does not operate acute inpatient psychiatry units for children or adolescents. However, the 8 East adult inpatient unit admits adolescents over the age of 16 who are felt to be able to benefit from the services offered by this unit. If appropriate, acute inpatient services are available to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. UMass Medical School operates several long-term hospital and residential programs for adolescents. These units are located on the Westborough State and Worcester State Hospital campuses. Programs operate under contract to the Department of Mental Health, which are the sole referrers. While referrals can be made by calling 508-334-1000 and asking to speak to the 8 East Unit, most referrals are made either by the patient's primary care physician or the patient's local emergency mental health screening program. Patients or families should immediately seek assistance at their nearest emergency room if the child's condition is considered life threatening.
