Cardiac rehabilitation at UMass Memorial Medical Center assists patients adjusting to cardiac disease, reduce risk factors and help patients to achieve their highest level of productivity.
Individuals are candidates for the program if they have had any of the any of the following conditions or procedures:
- Heart attack
- Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
- Valvular or other cardiac surgery
- Percutaneous coronary artery angioplasty or stents
- Stable angina pectoris
- Coronary artery disease documented by exercise tolerance test or coronary angiography
Individuals referred to the program participate in education, counseling, exercise and strength-training classes. Participants learn how to:
- Choose healthy and delicious foods
- Move toward a healthier weight
- Respond to life events with less stress
- Quit smoking
- Develop proper exercise habits
- Identify and treat symptoms relating to heart problems
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program team includes a medical director, health psychologist, nurse practitioner, registered nurses, exercise physiologists and a registered dietician.
