UMass Memorial Medical Center radiation oncologists treat a variety of cancers with radiotherapy. With nearly 2,000 new patient consultations a year, the department is one of the largest radiation oncology centers in Eastern United States.
Radiation oncology uses high-energy x-rays to attack cancer cells and treat a specific area. Another form of radiation oncology, known as brachytherapy, uses radiation implants, where a source of radioactivity is surgically placed inside the body near the tumor.
Radiation oncology treatments are provided for cancers of the:

Equipped with CT (computed tomography) simulators and linear accelerators, UMass Memorial radiation oncologists and other specialists work collaboratively to offer patients advanced radiation oncology services including:
- IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy)
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
- Total body irradiation
- High dose rate brachytherapy
- Prostate seed implants
- Cardiac brachytherapy
