<p><strong>WORCESTER</strong>&nbsp; - The Cancer Center of Excellence at UMass Memorial has a new, toll-free patient and physician access and referral line - 866-597-HOPE (4673).The HOPE telephone line provides patients and physicians with one telephone number to arrange care and treatment. Specially trained staff members answering the calls are supported by a registered nurse with extensive experience in cancer care and treatment. The Cancer Center's service promise is for all new cancer patients to be seen within five business days. For patients who are judged to need a referral even more quickly, a direct call from the referring doctor can obtain consultation within 24 hours.</p>
<p>The new access to expert cancer care parallels dramatic growth in the UMass Memorial Cancer Center of Excellence. Since his arrival one year ago as chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Medicine at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Alan Rosmarin, MD, has recruited oncologists whose expertise includes neuro-oncology, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, geriatric oncology, hematologic malignancies, stem cell transplantation and other specialty areas. Patients have access to subspecialty, multidisciplinary clinics for initial care or second opinion. The focus is on patient care and service, and excellent communication between the specialist and the referring doctor.
