UMass Memorial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was founded in 1977 as a basic life support ambulance service operated from the former Worcester City Hospital. Today, more than 70 professional paramedics from UMass Memorial EMS provide 24/7 advanced life support coverage via our 15-vehicle ambulance fleet to Worcester and Shrewsbury. Our team responds to medical and trauma emergencies along with police and fire department responders.
Based at UMass Memorial Medical Center, each emergency ambulance crew consists of two highly trained, experienced paramedics. Our EMS is one of only four in Massachusetts authorized to practice advanced airway management using special medications to help control breathing for critically ill patients. To care for patients in the prehospital environment, each ambulance includes oxygen, suction, heart monitors and other lifesaving devices.
UMass Memorial operates the EMS Communications Center, a secondary public safety answering point in Massachusetts linked directly to the 9-1-1 call centers in Worcester and Shrewsbury. Our dispatchers use nationally recognized standards for call receiving and triage and are trained to provide 9-1-1 callers with pre-arrival instructions.
