We are now offering many services from our Complementary Care Center that will benefit new moms.
You will learn simple breathing, relaxation, and guided imagery techniques to help you release tension and fears, and increase comfort throughout your pregnancy and birth.
Benefits of HypnoBirthing:

- Reduces and often eliminates fatigue during labor and much more
HypnoBirthing will be offered on every Monday in July from 6-8:30PM at the Complementary Care Center in Fitchburg. The cost is $200 for the five weeks and you will receive a book, CD, and information about hypno-birthing.
In September, HypnoBirthing will be offered at the Leominster Campus.
Prenatal Massage is available with Dawn Girard, LCMT at the Simonds-Hurd Complementary Care Center on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays by appointment. Please call her at 978-973-3135.
Massage during pregnancy will relieve the daily tension, aches, and pains your body is experiencing. It stimulates your lymphatic system, increasing immunity and the removal of toxins, as well as stabilizing hormonal levels and balancing the glandular system.
Benefits of Pre/Postnatal Massage:
- Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
- Reduce fatigue
- Alleviate backaches
- Enhance sleep
- Relieve headaches
- Relieve leg cramps
- Reduce swelling and edema
- Prepare pelvic muscles for birth
- Reposition pelvis after childbirth
- Help abdominal muscle tone
Prenatal massage at the complementary care center is performed by having an expectant woman lie on her side, propped up with pillows or positioning the mother-to-be in a semi-reclining position propped up by pillows.
Reiki is available free to patients of HealthAlliance Hospital, offered by trained Reiki volunteers on certain days of the week, currently Thursdays from 9am-1pm and alternating Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4-8 starting June 4th. Offered primarily as a relaxation technique, Reiki eases anxiety, promotes deeper breathing, relaxation of muscles, and decreased pain.
In addition, Hartford Hospital in Connecticut showed that Reiki used during pregnancy on a regular basis reduced pain during pregnancy by 78%, stress and anxiety by 94%, and nausea and morning sickness by 80% after Reiki sessions. The study also showed that a woman’s quality of sleep was improved by 86% when Reiki sessions were included during pregnancy.
Reiki consists of a gentle laying of hands on the body, particularly, but not limited to head, shoulders, arms/hands, knees and feet, though laboring moms often enjoy Reiki directly on the abdomen or on the low back. It is non-manipulative and can be given before, during or after labor. If you are interested in receiving a Reiki session, please share your request with your nurse.
Gift certificates for massage can be purchased through the Simonds-Hurd Complementary Care Center or at the Good Intentions Gift Shop in the lobby of the hospital on the Leominster Campus and can be used for the new mom to receive a massage in her room before or after delivery with physician consent, and dependent upon availability of massage therapists (Dawn Girard 978-973-3135 or Maia Wentrup 617-549-8967) or at the Complementary Care Center in Fitchburg with Dawn Girard on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays or Mondays by appointment.
