Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy services at HealthAlliance Hospital help individuals to achieve an active and independent lifestyle at work and at home, and to resume their recreational activities following illness, injury or surgery. Occupational therapy services are available on the Burbank and Leominster Campuses.

Occupational therapists treat patients who are unable to resume their usual daily activities such as self-care, homemaking and employment due to stroke, heart disease, arthritis, neurological disorders, head and upper extremity injuries, or following surgery, such as total joint replacement.

Hand Therapy
Hand therapists evaluate patients' functional ability to use their hands when affected by amputation, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis or joint replacement. Some of the treatment techniques used include splinting, sensory re-education, range of motion, strengthening, massage, joint mobilization and scar management therapeutic modalities, and education about body mechanics and joint protection.

Predriving Evaluation
Predriving evaluations are clinical assessments that provide a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's ability to return to independent driving. It involves assessing cognition, movement, strength, vision, perception, rules of the road and reflexes. Upon successful completion, candidates may participate in the on-the-road driving evaluation.

In addition to the services above, HealthAlliance Hospital also offers:

  • Ergonomic and adaptive equipment evaluations
  • Preoperative joint replacement evaluations
  • Scar management program
  • Splinting
  • Upper extremity therapy
