Dr. Michael Blute Receives Distinguished Contribution Award from American Urological Association

Worcester, MA - Michael Blute, MD, director of the Cancer Center of Excellence at UMass Memorial Health Care; professor of surgery the University of Massachusetts Medical School and interim director of the Division of Urology in the Department of Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center, recently received the 2010 Distinguished Contribution Award from the American Urological Association (AUA). The award was presented at the AUA's annual meeting on June 3, 2010 in San Francisco.
The Distinguished Contribution Award is presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of urology.
Dr. Blute received his award for making outstanding contributions in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of urologic malignancies. Over the course of his career, Blute has been a key contributor at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, including roles as co-investigator on research grants in clinical oncology, genetic susceptibility in cancer, and chemoprevention. He specializes in radical prostate surgery, urinary tract reconstruction after bladder cancer surgery, developed novel surgical techniques for large kidney tumors and promoted kidney sparing surgery for small kidney tumors. He is Emeritus Chair of the Mayo Clinic Department of Urology and served on the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors.
