WORCESTER - Jason Eisenmenger, RN, a clinical staff nurse at UMass Memorial Medical Center and vocalist for a local hip-hop band, Family Business 508, recently decided to combine his worlds by creating a tribute to his fellow nurses and showing his pride in the care that he provides. He co-wrote "UMass Memorial State of Mind," which echoes Jay Z's popular "Empire State of Mind," and recorded it along with Meg O'Connor, RN, a nurse in the ICU. Bill McNally of McNally Video Production co-wrote the lyrics and shot and edited the video.

The video made its debut at the third annual "A Celebration of Nursing," UMass Memorial Medical Center's nursing gala on January 19, 2011. Since the event, the video has gone viral on YouTube, logging tens of thousands of views. "I'm proud of UMass Memorial and the great patient care we all provide here," said Eisenmenger. "Writing this song was a way for me to tip my cap to all of the nurses here in a fun and creative way."

The video depicts Eisenmenger and O'Connor singing the song at various locations throughout the UMass Memorial Medical Center campus, interspersed with photos of many of their nursing colleagues. "This video, and the great response that it's had, is showing what we have known for a long time ... that the nurses at UMass Memorial are the best in the country," said Donna Gemme, MS,  RN,  associate chief nursing officer, who, along with nurse manager Peggy Naughton, MS, RN, CCRN, CNML, co-produced the video. "Everyone is so over-the-top proud of how this video has recognized our nurses. It has been such a positive morale booster for the entire organization!"
