WORCESTER - Michael
Bakerman, MD, has been named chief medical informatics officer (CMIO) at UMass
Memorial Health Care.
As CMIO, Dr Bakerman is responsible
for overseeing and advising on the adaptation of the Cornerstone project implementation into
clinical processes at UMass Memorial. Cornerstone is a multi-year, multi-entity
corporate initiative to implement common patient clinical and financial systems
and to reduce variability in processes and workflows across the system.
Currently in full design and implementation mode and continuing over the next
four years, the way UMass Memorial collects, views, shares, manages, and
interacts with all patient information will drastically change and improve. In
his role, Dr. Bakerman is also responsible for the development and deployment of
a system wide integration strategy for affiliated and independent ambulatory
physician practices.
"Dr. Bakerman is a proven and distinguished physician leader," said George
Brenckle, PhD, chief information officer at UMass Memorial Health Care. "We are
excited to have someone with his expertise and experience leading us through the
fast-moving environment of physician integration as we implement the Cornerstone
project."
A board certified cardiologist, Dr. Bakerman earned his medical degree at
Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed internship and residency training
as well as a fellowship in cardiology at Boston University, University Hospital
(now Boston Medical Center).
Prior to joining UMass Memorial, Dr. Bakerman was the associate medical
director for Partners Healthcare in Boston. He has also served as the medical
lead for clinical transformation services at Perot Systems (now a subsidiary of
Dell Computer). Dr. Bakerman was in private practice until 1999, when he became
a fulltime healthcare consultant.
He has been an active member of the American College of Physician Executives
(ACPE) since 1992, completing his master's degree in medical management at
Tulane University in 1998 and his CPE in 2003. Dr. Bakerman was elected to the
Board of ACPE in 2010. Among his contributions to the Board is his leadership
role in the development of the Health Information Technology (HIT) Leadership
Certification Program. Dr. Bakerman has published a number of articles in the
Physician's Executive Journal related to HIT and physician leadership.
A frequent lecturer, his most recent events included the National P4P summit
in San Francisco in 2010 and 2011 and the National Patient Safety Colloquium in
Boston in 2010. Dr. Bakerman has been associate faculty at the Tufts Healthcare
Institute in Boston participating in teaching residents in internal medicine
topics in managed care. He has also been associate faculty at the Partners
Clinical Process Improvement Program (CPIP) discussing topics in data management
and analysis.
