Discovering and Delivering Compassionate, Coordinated Care
UMass Memorial Cancer Center, located in Worcester, MA, is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis (complex cancers in the abdominal region). This condition refers to the growth of tumor cells on the surfaces of organs, such as the stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, gall bladder and, in women, the ovaries and uterus. Tumors may also grow on the tissue lining of the abdominal cavity known as the peritoneum. Because the abdomen has so many organs, cancer may spread from one organ to the next.
Until recently, peritoneal carcinomatosis was considered untreatable. Fortunately, major advances in all aspects of cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and symptom management, have lead to improved outcomes and quality of life for people with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Our clinicians have expert training to treat these cancers.
The Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of this form of cancer through comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and compassionate patient care.
Surgery
Thanks to improvements in our understanding of this disease, surgery is now an option for appropriate patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. This surgery is called cytoreductive surgery or tumor debulking. During surgery, the doctor removes as much of the tumor possible.
Innovative Chemotherapy Treatments
Our skilled surgical oncologists are nationally recognized for using an innovative treatment called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), where the chemotherapy solution is heated and inserted into the abdomen bathing the organs. The chemotherapy is used to kill any microscopic tumor cells that could not be seen at the time of surgery. This approach has improved the outcome for many peritoneal malignancy patients. UMass Memorial is one of only three hospitals in New England offering this procedure and is a high-volume program.
