At some point in time, everyone has difficulty paying attention or listening, but when these characteristics are persistent and begin to affect one's life, they can be signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Developmental and behavioral pediatricians in the ADHD Clinic at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in Worcester care for children between the ages of five and 12, whether or not their diagnoses involve hyperactivity. A physician examines each child, and if he/she has ADHD, makes recommendations to help the child function with more ease at home and school. If medication is suggested, the primary care pediatrician is advised on which medication to prescribe for the child and how to manage the medication.
Because children mature at different rates and are very different in personality and energy levels, it is useful to get an expert's opinion on whether the behaviors exhibited are appropriate for the child's age.
