Testing/Screening

Many diagnostic tests available today can tell doctors if you have type 1 diabetes, also called type 1 diabetes mellitus or juvenile diabetes. Your doctor will decide which diabetes screening test is best for you based on your medical history, diabetes risk factors and whether you have diabetes symptoms.

All of the diabetes screening tests listed below, which involve taking a blood sample to measure your blood sugar levels, are performed in your doctor's office or in a lab.

  • A1c test
  • Random blood sugar test
  • Fasting blood sugar test
  • Autoantibody testing

If you are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, your doctor will perform an A1c test at your regular appointments every three to six months to find out how well your treatment is working.

For your convenience, UMass Memorial blood draw stations are also located throughout the region for your ongoing testing needs.
