Toxicology

The Center for Toxicology at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester serves as a valuable resource for physicians and hospitals treating critically ill and poisoned patients. The center has a medical toxicologist available around the clock and welcomes requests for consultations from medical professionals.

Toxicology is the study of the harmful effects of chemicals on living organisms. At the Center for Toxicology, our professional staff:

  • Manages adverse drug events and interactions
  • Conducts pharmacologic analysis of patients with severe illnesses requiring multiple drug therapies
  • Provides independent medical evaluations for individuals exposed to toxins in the workplace, home and environment

The transfer of patients to UMass Memorial for on-site treatment by the Center for Toxicology's staff can be made by calling LifeFlight at 800-322-4354.

Outpatient evaluation for environmental and occupational toxicology and interpretation of toxicological testing is available at the Medical Toxicology Clinic. For appointments, call 508-421-1455. The center also provides analysis of herbal products and substances of abuse as well as expert consultation for hazardous materials or chemical weapons.
