At UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester physicians and nurses are committed to diagnosing, preventing and treating osteoporosis in our Osteoporosis Research and Treatment Center, as well as in our Endocrinology and Orthopedics Departments.
Our Osteoporosis Research and Treatment Center has played a significant role in the clinical research of new treatment modalities for osteoporosis, including the use of Fosamax, Actonel, Evista and Miacalcin. Presently, the center is engaged in a four-year observational study of Forteo, which is a daily injection that stimulates bone formation.
Evaluation for osteoporosis may include any of the following:
- A comprehensive health history and physical exam
- A review of nutritional and lifestyle habits
- Bone mineral density testing
- Lab tests to rule out secondary causes of bone loss
- Consultations with physicians and nurse specialists to talk about options and treatments
Staff at our Spine Center are experts in treating fractures associated with osteoporosis.
