Infertility is defined as one year of attempting to get pregnant without success, and it affects about 15 percent of all couples for various reasons. UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, is the only hospital in Central Massachusetts with a team of fellowship-trained infertility specialists – doctors with advanced expertise in helping women get pregnant – who offer comprehensive evaluation and infertility treatment.
In our patient-centered environment, you are the most important member of this team, and you are encouraged to participate in all decision-making about your care.
Because there are so many different causes of infertility in women – both physical and emotional – a comprehensive evaluation is an important first step. At UMass Memorial, infertility evaluation involves a complete medical history, physical examination of both partners, and blood and imaging tests.
Treatment depends on the cause of infertility, and is carefully tailored to your individual needs and concerns. Treatment for infertility may include:
- Education and counseling
- Lifestyle changes
- Medicines that help women grow and release eggs from the ovaries (ovulation)
- Surgery to correct anatomical (body structure) problems that prevent a woman from getting pregnant
- Medicines to treat infections, clotting disorders or other health conditions that may prevent pregnancy
- Fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization, which is also known as IVF
Our infertility patients who undergo in vitro fertilization are cared for by our expert staff and receive ongoing blood testing and ultrasound exams at UMass Memorial. The process for retrieving eggs, creating embryos (fertilizing the eggs) and implanting them inside the uterus is managed at our partner facility in Lexington, MA.
When surgery is part of your fertility treatment, we offer the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques for less scarring, less pain and blood loss, fewer complications, shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
For your convenience, infertility services are available at our Westborough office located at 154 East Main Street as well as at the Medical Center in Worcester.
