Primary Care or Specialist
Primary Care Physicians Primary care physicians provide their patients with a broad spectrum of health care, both preventive and curative, and coordinate all of the care patients require, including referral to specialist physicians. Most health insurance plans require that patients have a primary care physician.
The UMass Memorial online physician directory includes primary care physicians in the following areas. You can narrow your search to one of these areas by using the drop-down box on the search page.
- Family medicine: Family physicians care for patients of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. Some family medicine physicians provide maternity care.
- Internal medicine: A primary care physician who specializes in adult internal medicine, specifically the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases.
- Geriatric medicine: A primary care specialty focused on the care of elderly patients.
- Pediatric primary care: Primary care physicians who treat infants, children and adolescents.
Specialists Specialty physicians have advanced training and experience in identifying and treating diseases and conditions of particular parts of the body. For example, a cardiologist treats conditions related to the heart, and a dermatologist treats conditions and diseases of the skin.
Please check with your health insurance plan to determine if a referral from a primary care physician is necessary before seeing a specialist.
